Flowers, S’mores, Brunch, Oh My!

One of the many reason why I love Curt is because he always surprises me. Whether, it’s with my favorite flower, a nice note, treats or flowers AND a fun filled weekend I know he will always keep me on my toes.

Well, this surprise included: flowers, chocolate, shopping, movies, and brunch! Read below to see what Curt planned for us this past weekend.

Gerber Daisy’s and a note title “Aucutt Spectacular Weekend!”  He had planned this entire weekend out. Friday was a special dessert (he refused to tell me what it was), he actually brought the dessert home on Thursday because he couldn’t wait. The special dessert was….

Gourmet S’mores! For those of you who don’t know me, I LOVE s’mores! And these aren’t just any s’more….this came with flavored, homemade marshmallows! Curt picked out chocolate and raspberry, they also come with these little fire stations, waffle cookie type things, and Belgian chocolate (fantastic!) I had to use my Gluten Free graham crackers and they were AMAZING! We had s’mores in March! If you live in the Des Moines area you have to check out Beaverdale Confections!

Enjoying my s'mores!

So Friday, was our special dessert. On the agenda for Saturday was workout (he put that on just for me, he is the best), IMax movie, shopping (the entire afternoon!), lunch, and grilling! Then on Sunday we had reservations at Americana for brunch.  Americana may be our new favorite restaurant.  Curt had the entire weekend planned out, and planning is my favorite!

So Saturday morning I got up and ran outside and then we got ready to go to my first EVER IMax movie. I was VERY excited.

Waiting for the movie to begin!

We went and saw this:

Born To Be Wild was great and I really enjoyed the IMax, it is a very cool experience. I’m going to have do a little research on the two women and their organizations in this movie because they are truly amazing and inspiring. I would love to learn more and find out how we can help.

After the movie we went and had a quick lunch and Noodles & Co, and then we spent the rest of the afternoon doing my favorite hobby….SHOPPING! Curt was great the entire time and didn’t complain once!

Today we had reservations at Americana for brunch at 10am. We have eaten at Americana for dinner before and LOVE it, great food, great atmosphere and a great experience.  We kept hearing all about their Brunch and so we decided to check it out, and of course American did not disappoint. Brunch was oh so filling and oh so good! Again, if you are local or traveling through please hit up Americana! I promise you will not be disappointed!

Here are a few pictures of our morning.

Concentrate on that coffee!

Enjoying my gluten-free friendly brunch.

Delicious!!

VERY FULL after a great brunch!

Our “Understudy” Dance…

I don’t know about you but I really love music, I try to pay special attention to the lyrics and I can really be moved by certain lyrics in songs. One of the reasons I love our first dance song so much was obviously because of the lyrics, plus the guy I danced with is pretty awesome, and we practiced our dance a lot. 🙂

Our first dance song was a little faster than I originally planned our first dance being but I loved it.  I also felt like it was a little unique for a first dance, it wasn’t some country song, it wasn’t “I’ll Be,” by Edwin McCain or something original. Now, if you had a first dance song like the ones I listed, I’m not being mean! I’m sure you had a lovely first dance, I’m just saying that it wouldn’t have been for us. But was perfect for us was the song below…I love the lyrics, I love the band. I remember practicing our first dance in our kitchen for months! Curt has much better rhythm than me. (He is a pretty awesome drummer).

For our First “Paper” Anniversary, I even made a picture frame of my favorite first dance photo (below) and wrote all the lyrics to our dance around the picture. I’ll show it to you some day.

If you don’t know what song I’m talking about here it is…

My favorite line from this song…

“Oh, and when the kids are old enough We’re gonna teach them to fly…”

Now, as much as I LOVED that song for our first dance, if I would have known about the song below it would have been quite difficult to choose the perfect song for us. I am currently in love with this song and I think it is the perfect first dance together. You know how in plays the main role has an understudy, well this song would have been our “understudy,” for our first dance. And knowing how much I love it now, probably would have taken the main role.

Be sure to pay special attention to the lyrics. So even though we have been married over a year and we have our first dance, I think from now on this will be considered our alternate first dance song. 🙂

My favorite section of the song is this:

“I surrender who I’ve been for who you are,for nothing makes me stronger than your fragile heart. If I had only felt how it feels to be yours, well, I would have known what I’ve been living for all along.”

Here are a few pictures from our first dance.

Just call me Alvin…

Image

Alvin the Chipmunk that is.

That’s right just call me Alvin since a chipmunk is what I’ve looked like the past 5 days. I FINALLY bit the bullet and got my widsom teeth pulled after much persuasion from a lot of people.  I didn’t necessarly HAVE to do it just yet but they needed to get out eventually….and I thought the middle of winter would be good, little did I know we would have unseasonably warm temps which makes it even worse to be stuck inside.

So I got my widsom teeh removed last Thursday and I’ll spare you the gross details. Let me just say  it really sucks but has been made SO much better due to my husband. Curt has been the best nurse! He took Thursday and Friday off work and I knew he was excited to just be able to relax and do whatever but he was more at my side then doing his own thing. He got me water, my meds, went to the store a million times for me, he was unbelievable! I am so bummed that I’m still home today and that he has to go into work but I’m so grateful that even when I look like this…..

….He still loves me, now that’s true love. 🙂

Year One

Year One, that is the title of this blog and as of today it should read Year One and a week or so…. That’s right we celebrated our ONE Year Anniversary two weekends ago. Can you believe a little over a year ago we were doing this….

I have enjoyed every minute of year one. I’ve enjoyed celebrating our first Christmas as a married couple, bringing in 2011 together, the stress of the almost loss of my job, painting, lots of renos, trips to Milwaukee and Ozarks, Saturday mornings at the Farmers Market, learning about Organic buying, family get togethers, but most of all year one has been a year of new and excxiting experiences together and learning every day about our relationship.

Some people out there may think we need to change the name of this blog, but I’m not so sure we should.   I want every year to be like Year One, and it should be. Our years should and hopefully be filled with lots of new, exciting, stressful, happy, sad times. We will always be learning and experiencing new things so yes I’m keeping the blog name. Year One fits us well, and hopefully Year Two brings just as many if not more great things to help us grow and learn from one another.

I married my best friend and with my best friend we will continue to experience Year Two just as we experienced Year One.

In the words of Frank….

I thought I would let Frank give you a glance at how we’ve been feeling the last two months.

That’s Life

That’s life (That’s life) That’s what all the people say You’re riding high in April, shot down in May

But I know I’m gonna change that tune When I’m back on top, back on top in June I said that’s life (That’s life)

And as funny as it may seem Some people get their kicks stomping on a dream But I don’t let it, let it get me down

‘Cause this fine old world, it keeps spinnin’ around I’ve been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet, a pawn and a king

I’ve been up and down and over and out and I know one thing Each time I find myself flat on my face I pick myself up and get back in the race

That’s life (That’s life) I tell you, I can’t deny it I thought of quitting, baby but my heart just ain’t gonna buy it

And if I didn’t think it was worth one single try I’d jump right on a big bird and then I’d fly

I’ve been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet, a pawn and a king I’ve been up and down and over and out and I know one thing

Each time I find myself layin’ flat on my face I just pick myself up and get back in the race That’s life (That’s life)

That’s life and I can’t deny it Many times I thought of cutting out but my heart won’t buy it

But if there’s nothing shaking come this here July I’m gonna roll myself up in a big ball and die, my, my

I will be back soon to fill you in on the Life we’ve been living the past few months it’s been exciting, stressful, relaxing, overwhelming and more! Just how Life should be!

Hope you enjoy this photo of Brynn who is clearly enjoying Life. 🙂

Where I’ve been….

So it’s been awhile since my last post. I have a new goal for this year and it’s to post weekly! EEK! Hope I can stick to it!! It would be easier to post weekly if I could figure out WordPress, so any advice would be helpful.

In the mean time where have we been and what have we been up to? Well, lots actually!!

We went on vacation with my side to the Ozarks for a full week.  It was SO nice to get away for awhile and just relax.  We had perfect weather and it was so fun to be with the family.  We hiked, shopped, relaxed, ate good food, went boating and just chilled. It was great. Below are some pictures of our vacation.

The house we stayed at on vacation. LOVED the deck.

Hanging out on the swimming dock.

Hiking at Ha Ha Tonka Park, one of my favorite parts of vacation.

Going Tubing.

Before we left....our traditional last picture.

Vacation was a welcome break from the stress of my job.  I shouldn’t say that, I LOVE my job, but this year’s legislative session put a lot of stress on me because I work for a grant.  I’m not sure if any of you follow politics but here in Iowa this last session was INSANE!!! If you don’t know I work for a grant from the state, with budget cuts my job was definitely on the line.  Especially, because the majority of the Republicans didn’t seem to think tobacco prevention and control funding was important. The lack of support from Conservatives on not just this issue but all social and health programs is very sad and disappointing. However, I will go into that in another post….Needless to say the past few months have been stressful.  I will keep you posted on this issue.

We also had some guests a few weekends ago, Curt’s parents came to spend the weekend!  It was perfect timing because it was the 4th of July weekend and lots of things were taking place in Des Moines. We went to the Yankee Doodle Pops at the Capitol grounds on Friday.  A well known  orchestra plays and then when it gets dark they have a fireworks!  It’s supposed to be a “must do” if you live here but it left us wanting more….it was disappointing. But still great company! The next day we went to the Farmer’s Market. By far, my favorite Summer activity is going the Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings.  Then we took them out to my favorite pizza place Gusto Pizza! It’s SO good, and they have Gluten Free pizza crust so I LOVE it. It was a fun to visit with them and to do new things around Des Moines.  Have I ever told you how much I love living here??

We also had my aunt’s annual 4th of July picnic that Sunday, so we even had more family time!

As you can read we have been super busy with family visits, holidays, and vacations.

I promise to post more often and let you know what else we’ve been up to.

One thing we really have been pursuing is eating more organic/natural foods.  But I’ll leave that to another post. But to get you in the mood for that post, I want to share a video with you that you must all watch. I promise it will get you thinking about what we really are eating and putting into our bodies. The video is long, but worth your time.
