Sunday Coffee

**Hey, Hey, Hey! Guess what?! Grayson slept in this weekend!!! On both Saturday and today he slept until 7am!!!!! Friends, this has NEVER happened, so imagine me jumping up and down over and over and dancing in the kitchen with Curt because we too got to sleep until 7! I actually think it’s because he has a bad cold and is cutting his canine teeth. So little guy needs some extra sleep. Whatever the reason, it has been glorious.

**Now that we are getting a consistent 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep does that mean it’s time for baby #2 to alter the sleeping universe. (NOT AN ANNOUNCEMENT!). Curt is rolling his eyes right now…he is enjoying his sleep. Also, did I just jinx us? Will Grayson be getting up at 430 am tomorrow? Probably! 😉

**I have two awesome sites that I frequent a lot when it comes to little ones. Kelly Mom, is great for all things breastfeeding, pumping, formula etc. I was an exclusive pumper and this site is FANTASTIC! New mommies, 2nd time mommies, 3rd time mommies…any of you I promise you will benefit from this site. The other site is The Baby Sleep Site. I FIRMLY believe in sleep regressions, Grayson has been SPOT on with sleep regressions (18 month sleep regression anyone?!). And this site has been a lifesaver. We all know I’m a schedule person, so I think their sample schedules too. Check those two out mommies!

**Speaking of schedules….I know I’ve talked about what a crazy schedule person I am in the past. But I just think little ones THRIVE and NEED  schedules. Anyways, I understand that sometimes it’s just not going to work to get him a nap on time, or bedtime on time. But whenever possible if I can make it work, I’ll do it. For instance, today we are having a lunch party for my niece. It’s at noon here in town. Grayson will be fast asleep. I won’t keep him up to go…can you imagine a tired, not feeling good, teething toddler in a restaurant…with other people?! So, as much as I would like to take him since we will be close to home he will just stay home with daddy and take a nap like normal. Sorry Caleigh! On the flip side, in a few weeks we have a wedding out of town. Luckily, the wedding isn’t until after his nap. Grayson can sleep on the way for his nap and get a good two hour nap in. I know bedtime will be off that night, but I’m hoping the stimulation of a wedding and dance will make him somewhat ok. Not that we will be staying out until midnight or even 10 for that matter, but I’m sure it will be past his bedtime. And that’s ok, we will deal and he will be ok! And so will we…..I hope. 😉

**Basically, what I’m trying to say is schedules are important to me but I understand sometimes we get a little off of them…. 😉

**It’s been feeling like the end of October not the middle of September here in Iowa. I for one love it. I got all my Fall decorations out, got the front door decked out, my cinnamon candles going….ahhh…This is my favorite time of year!

I better get going, enjoy your day my friends!

Sunday Coffee

**Our son has turned us into lepers (that or we just have way to many preggo friends ;))….let me explain. A couple weeks ago we planned a BBQ with some friends, one of which is pregnant and the other with a 4 month old. Well, two days before we were to have everyone over chicken pox was in Grayson’s daycare…I didn’t think too much of it but I did call and ask his Pediatrician about it and to tell him about the pregnant friend coming over and the 4 month old. Apparently, being exposed to chicken pox while pregnant can cause MAJOR issues to the fetus. So to be safe we cancelled. Then this weekend we were supposed to go to another friends baby shower….well now Grayson has been exposed to hand, foot and mouth….again didn’t think much of it but apparently a no, no again to be around a pregnant lady and a bunch of other kids. SO we stayed home. I’m sorry friends!!! I hope to see you all say in about two years! 😉

**All jokes aside, I’m so glad I called my doc and had my friends call their OB. Luckily, Grayson never did get chicken pox and two weeks ago he got his vaccine for it…so hopefully we dodged that bullet. I’m still wondering about hand, foot and mouth. I know how contagious that can be and Grayson has been off this week….so let’s hope it’s just teething or a cold and he dodges that bullet too!

**Do your kids go to daycare? All I know is this kid better not miss ANY days of school! 😉

**I never thought I’d learn so much by having a boy…I mean aside from the new parent type stuff. I’m talking like educational…I can’t tell you how much I’ve learned about trucks, dinosaurs and reptiles lately. Grayson LOVES reading and he LOVES reading the same books over and over. So far we are stuck on one all about trucks…So I know all about giant excavators, different kinds of tractors and how to build a road. 🙂 I’m learning so much!

**As I mentioned earlier I know several people that are pregnant right now. I know 3 people that have the same due date!!! Needless, to say we will be busy the next couple months with showers galore. I’m so excited for them all! One friend is having a baby girl, another is having a boy and another doesn’t know!!! All this new baby talks make me a little baby feverish….. 😉

**Do you have big 4th of July plans? I have this Thursday and Friday off which I’m PUMPED about. We will go to a carnival for a bit and there is a free eye screening for little ones I want to try and hit up then a BBQ. Should be a nice time!

Well, I’m off to enjoy my Sunday. I hope you all have a wonderful week!!

Sunday Coffee

**Have you seen the trailer for Girl Meets World? It’s the spin-off of Boy Meets World, and it’s centered around Topanga and Cory’s daughter?? I’m not ashamed to admit I will be watching!!!

**We watched Frozen last week and like everyone else we LOVED IT! Well, I shouldn’t speak for my hubby (he did say it wasn’t bad), but I LOVED it. I totally get what everyone is talking about! I felt some major girl power after watching it. We don’t “let” Grayson watch TV…meaning there is no set time he gets 20 min or whatever. But I did have this on while he was in the room. He wasn’t too interested unless a song came on. The music is SO GOOD! And kid like his music! Great taste! 😉

**Do you have a TV rule for your kiddos? Grayson isn’t even really interested in TV but it’s not something I would just turn on for him to watch every day. If we have it on we are watching something and if he starts to get way to interested as in he won’t even look at us when we talk, we turn it off. I have watched Sesame Street with him before when he is SUPER grumpy or sick for a little bit, but it’s few and far between. Am I opposed to him watching TV? No, do I think we need to have it on whenever he is up and in the room, no, do I think he needs to zone out in front of it, no. So we just keep an eye on it and him.

**Side note on the TV…we try not to watch things like the news, or anything graphic when he is in the room. The little he does watch I don’t need him seeing anything violent or want him to.

**Grayson is a walking machine!! He really took off on the walking side of things about two weeks ago…and just gets better and more confident every day. He no longer chooses to crawl places he WALKS/RUNS. He is ALL OVER THE PLACE! Gone are the days where I can quickly run to another room this kid can’t be left alone for a second! He is so independent and can obviously do anything and everything (so he thinks ;)) I love him to pieces.

**A couple of weeks ago after a very trying day with our independent little guy, we were giving him a bath when Curt said “How are we going to do this with two kids?!” HAHA, He was like do you think this is just a phase or his personality? Referring to his independent I don’t care if you say no personality. I said well first, he is one…I think that’s what one year olds do. Do we maybe have a little bit more stubborn, independent one year old? Perhaps….. 😉 So if you see my hubby getting gray hair earlier than norm you now know the reason is our independent little guy.

**Speaking of the littlest one…I love that Grayson isn’t afraid to get dirty! He loves smashing his hands in the sand, playing in the grass, messing around with his food. Even though I might send me into hysterics some days when I wonder how I will EVER get the mud stain/pasta stain out…I think it’s so good for him to experience that. Get messy dear boy!

Edited to add: **yesterday, this couple came up to us and the wife said “I just have to tell you what my husband said, he said that your baby looks like the Prince.” Hahaha perhaps we have some Royal blood in us after all…well I for one thing Prince George is super cute and my own son, so I call that a win. 🙂

Well, I’m off to enjoy the day…the stormy day that is!! Whatever you do today enjoy friends!!

My NOT so favorite things…

I’m certainly no expert when it comes to babies but now that we have survived the first year I thought it would be fun to do some posts on our favorite things, not so favorite things etc. This post will detail out 10 items that just didn’t work for us. That’s not to say someone else has it and LOVES it, but for us and Grayson it was just a flop or we felt like we didn’t use it enough to compensate spending money on it. I have a lot of friends having babies (congrats mamas to be!) and a lot who just had babies (congrats mamas!), so thought I’d share some of my not so favorite items for you to either leave off your registry (if you choose) or to relate! ENJOY!!

Note: I’m not adding a lot of pictures or linking ALL the items, just one’s that I think you might want a photo with. 😉 And I pretty much link to Amazon in case you want to try it out for yourself you can buy it right there!

  1. Boppy: I thought I would need TWO of these, we ended up with one. I thought I would use it nursing all the time. Well, as you probably know nursing did not come easy to me. So I rarely USED a Boppy for that reason. Then I thought it might be good for tummy time or just sitting there etc. It was ok…I used it a few times while pumping so I could put Grayson close to me that I could reach his paci when it fell out when he was really little or so he could get some time on his side (see picture). But for us we would have been fine without… Additionally, for nursing (which I think some women use this for a lot) I felt like just didn’t work for us when we did nurse. It was curved and stiff I hated using it! The item I LOVED for nursing was The Brest Friend Pillow. It’s bigger, one side is softer the other firmer…It was wider so seemed more sturdy etc. So the boppy was pretty much a no go for us. However, now that he is older he does love playing with it and resting his head on it haha.IMG_0400
  2. These nightgowns: I thought for sure I would want/need little outfits that didn’t have legs and was just open. For easy diaper changes etc. But they were all so big on him and they always rode up I felt like it seemed uncomfortable!
  3. Mittens: You know the little glove things all newborns have to keep from scratching themselves because we all know it is clearly impossible to cut their nails when they are that little. We had two pair, used them once they fell off and got lost forever. Who know’s where they are at! The item that came in handy were all the little onesies that had the built in mittens. You just put them in a long sleeve one and flipped it over their little hands! Worked like a charm! Don’t waste your money on the mittens, just get the shirts.
  4. Bottle Warmer: I bought one and then returned it when I realized the one I bought wouldn’t fit the bottles I had (crazy I know!). But I never replaced it and just put his bottle in warm water when I needed too. It worked out just fine.
  5. Pajamas with snaps: Don’t get me wrong he LIVED in the zip up pajamas the first two months of his life….but snap pajamas=nightmare!!! I hated using them!!! They took forever to snap and then if you are off on ONE the whole thing is messed up!! The crotch area always had a million little snaps…ugh. Just get the zip up footie ones…
  6. Newborn socks: Again get the zip up footie pajama ones…no matter how much you THINK the little socks will fit and stay on the little feet THEY WON’T!
  7. Newborn shoes: I know, I know they look so cute! But if you get them and YOU can put them on those little chubby awkward feed more power to ya! Good luck!
  8. Wipe warmer: I never got one, but read about how it’s not worth the money. Yes, you feel terrible a couple times when they scream out and it’s a shock to the system I’m sure to have a cold wipe on your bottom…but they get used to it. Besides, if your little ones goes to daycare eventually they don’t have a warmer….so best get used to the cold feeling early on I say.
  9. Baby specific laundry detergent: I read up on this A LOT to decide if I should make the switch….basically if you use anything now that is something like free from dyes etc. You should be fine. Unless you have a little one that has REALLY sensitive skin. We use the ALL FREE AND CLEAR and have used it since he was born. We never had any issues and it saves on having to buy to separate detergents. And saving money with a newborn is a win in my book.
  10. Dishwasher basket: You think this is a great idea!! But for us we HATED it. It didn’t even hold our bottle nipples! And it doesn’t hold a lot anyways. You are better off hand washing (that’s right hand washing) for 5 minutes then using this thing….

And then I wanted to share a 6 items that I won’t be including in my favorites that seem to get overlooked.

  1. Washcloths: You might think that the washcloths you already have will be fine…and they are fine…for you. But the baby ones are the right size and SO SOFT! I don’t’ know why but they are much better on the little newborn skin instead of normal wash cloths. Get at least 10-15….I know that seems like a lot but just wiping baby down, how often you decide to give baths…they can go quick.
  2. Burp Cloths: Not just any burp cloths…do yourself a favor and just get the cloth diapers and use them as burp cloths. And if you have a spitter like we did you will want something VERY absorbent.
  3. Bibs: Again…not just any bib the bibs that have that waterproof backing on it or in it.
  4. Fragrance free dish soap: As I mentioned above we did a lot of hand washing…so using a fragrance free dish soap was a must. As much as I love the smell of lavender I felt bad washing his bottle nipples in that…our favorite is Seventh Generation.
  5. Pacis: I know a lot of people aren’t there are not big believers in pacis…whether you feel that it causes nipple confusion for nursing, teeth issues etc. I thought I would be a no paci person too… I do NOT think using a paci deterred him from nursing or confused him at all. But in the hospital I thought we would use it just once but it worked like a charm and I know babies have a need…NEED to suck and it’s soothing. So why not? I don’t think it’s ruined anything so far and we will wean him off of it. I’m a fan…we like Nuk the best.
  6. Bumbo: I know awhile back these got recalled but they are back on the shelf. I say just use common sense with these…keep them on the ground…once the little ones learn to be a bit more mobile stop using. We loved ours and I think it helped a lot with his acid reflux. I personally think it helped getting him to sit so early alone too (5 months). He loved it! IMG_1319

There ya have it! Again, this is just our opinion maybe there is something on this list you LOVED. I’d love to hear about it and I’d love to hear anything you would like to add to either of these lists.

Enjoy your Friday friends!

525,600 minutes….

That’s how many minutes are in one year and one year is exactly the amount of time Grayson has been in our lives. One year ago today a little 6 lb 10 oz boy entered our lives and we became parents. Parents to a boy who through his first year of life has amazed us, worried us and made us better people. I am so thankful Grayson is in our lives and we are truly blessed. Happy birthday to my son.

On this happiest of day’s I want to thank you my sweet boy for….

entering our lives and flipping our lives upside down…..

teaching us patience….

teaching us to slow down and turn off the world at moments…

letting us view this fast paced world through your eyes, a child’s eyes and wonderment….

cheering you on for the tiniest milestones and the biggest….

laughing and cuddling with you….

your open mouth, slobbery kisses….

all the 2am feedings, and 4 am feedings and 6 am feedings….

making our hearts full.

6 tiny pounds, that’s all it took for our lives to be changed forever.

Happy birthday my sweet, funny boy. I can’t wait to celebrate many, many more with you.

Sunday Coffee-early edition

**This is an “early edition” because we pushed our clocks back one extra hour since daylight savings ends. So when you have small children I guess they don’t get the memo. Grayson was up at 515am but in his defense it REALLY should have been 615…..and he is already down for a nap. Wish I could go back to bed. Any advice on getting kids use to the time change? Or do we just wait it out for a few days?

**Researching appliances is no fun. We are in the market for a new washer and dryer. Any opinions?

**I love October but I really LOVE November. We celebrate our anniversary, Thanksgiving is coming soon, which means Christmas is close!

**I love the holidays, and I can’t wait to celebrate them this year with Grayson. I have always been a big believer in traditions, and we will incorporate some that we had growing up and create some new ones.

**One tradition involves Santa. Curt grew up with Santa not wrapping his presents and I grew up with Santa wrapping mine……so it has been up for debate on whether or not Santa will wrap Grayson’s…..I know, I know… jealous of the conversations we are having. 🙂 What did Santa do for your presents?

I hope you all have a great first week of November!

And just for smiles, enjoy these picture of Grayson painting his first pumpkin. 🙂 A new tradition I think we will keep.

Where has the time gone….

5 months, 5 months! I can’t believe Grayson is 5 months old! He has been growing by leaps and bounds! I know i say this all the time, but time is going so fast! it seems like just yesterday we were sitting in the doctor getting our first ultrasound done! So time may seem like its going fast so we soak up every minute of it. Below is his update!

~ Sitting. Yes, he can sit all by himself! Mind you it’s only for a several seconds, but still!
~ his exercise saucer. Grayson seems pretty independent and likes to move about and be doing something. He loves his saucer!
~ standing (with assistance of course 🙂 )
~ making loud, screeching noises over and over, this kid wants to make sure he is heard.
~ rice cereal. Yes we have been “practicing” eating with some rice cereal in the evening. He LOVES it and its the funniest thing ever to watch him eat.
~ bath time

~ still not digging tummy time
~ dropping a toy and then not getting it back right away (again patience will be taught very early) 🙂
~ waiting for his bottle. As you can see he likes to eat. 🙂
~ missing nap time and going to bed late. This kid likes his sleep, he goes to bed around six, I know…so early! And it’s a big bummer because we get home so late and we only get a short amount of awake time with him. It has been a HARD adjustment. But he needs his sleep and that would be selfish to keep him up when he is so tired. So we make due.

We are loving life as a family of three. And being a mom is truly the best thing in the world. I love every moment even when we had the worst flu ever going around, even then (the last two weeks have been horrendous in the health department from a cold to the flu and back to a cold, boo!).

Grayson is really a great baby and I love watching him experience new things every day. And just because, here are a few other photos of our little guy. And no he is not storing anything in those cheeks of his that’s all baby fat and I love every bit of it. 🙂

4 months

A couple weeks late but here are some pictures of Grayson at 4 months! He turned 4 months on July 4th, so I decided to go with a patriotic onesie instead of the white onesie I have been doing.

And….a little update into his life. 🙂

Grayson has been growing by leaps and bounds! He is more aware and has longer awake times. He has been talking, no screaming a lot. He wants to make sure he can be heard. 🙂 His naps always tend to be about 45 minutes long. He takes about three naps a day and goes to bed between 6 and 7. I would love for his bedtime to be around 730 or 8, but this kid needs his sleep! He doesn’t take a afternoon nap well so his bedtime is early. Currently, he goes to bed around 630 by himself and wakes up around 1am to eat and then back down until 5am. We try and hold him off until close to 6 am to eat to keep him on a good daycare schedule, but for some reason he will not sleep until 6. He wakes up and is usually happy and talkative. Overrall, things are going well! We had his 4 month appointment and he is a whopping 14lbs and 23 inches long. He is compact. 🙂

So that’s a little insight to Grayson’s life right now! Now, on to the fun pictures and likes and dislikes!

~ standing
~ bath time
~ knocking over block towers
~ sleeping in his swing (which we try not to do as often anymore)
~ putting anything and everything in his mouth (baby proofing is just around the corner)

~ Being rocked, this kid likes to look around I can tell he is already independent or wants to be.
~ waiting for his bottle (patience is something we will be teaching VERY early)

Oh my gosh, I can only think of two dislikes right now! I’m sure there are more….but he is a pretty easy baby. Especially now that we have his acid reflux under control he is pretty happy the majority of the day.

Can’t wait to see what 5 months will bring us!

3 months and then some….

So time seems to have gotten away from me and I realized I never posted Grayson’s 3 month update and in about two weeks he will be 4 months! Please forgive me, but things have been crazy here. I started work again, and Grayson has spent a total of about 5 days in daycare because soon after he started the poor guy got the flu! He has been battling the flu for about a week so hopefully we are on the mend. He was also was diagnosed with acid reflux, we got him some medicine and now that’s not working! So we need to get new medicine but can’t until Monday (darn insurance!). Then I got the flu! So it’s been a rough couple of weeks but we are slowly feeling better and will hopefully get new meds for the little man so he can feel better. And now it’s Fathers Day Weekend so we plan to stay healthy and spend all our time with daddy 🙂 I hope out all have a wonderful weekend!

3 months!

~ Bath Time
~ Eating (when he feels good and his medicine is working 😦 )
~ Sitting in his bumbo (so glad we bought one!)
~ Putting toys in his mouth
~ The song “Just Give Me a Reason,” by Pink. Whenever he starts to cry or needs help going to sleep, we can play this song and it works miracles!
~ Looking around

~ Lotion after bath time
~ Sleeping at daycare (he isn’t very good at taking naps at daycare yet, any advice from you working momma’s on this?)
~ Tummy Time
~ Going to sleep (some days are better than others)

So to sum up, ever since his medicine he has been a totally different baby. He seems happier, sleeps better and plays a lot but now that its not working we are back to cranky baby. And who can fault him he is in pain! Poor kid! I will keep you posted!

In other news, Grayson was waiting for daddy to get home to share his Fathers Day weekend plans with him! Post to come but for now enjoy some pictures of our almost 4 month old! 🙂

Happy Fathers Day Weekend!

Loves his bumbo!

Celebrating mommy’s 27th birthday!

3 Generations! Happy Father’s Day to my father in law!

Happy Father’s Day to my dad! (Boone dinner train)

Happy Father’s Day to my best friend!

Enjoy your weekend! And celebrate all the amazing dad’s in your life! Special shout out to my amazing dad, my father in law, and of course my hubby! Enjoy your day guys!

Change is good…

Change is good….right? Well, hope so because next week will be a BIG change for me.

Next week I go back to work. After 12 wonderful (minus the first few 😉 ) weeks I have to leave my adorable baby boy in the hands of someone I barely know. Don’t get me wrong we did a lot of research, asked a lot of questions and decided on a great daycare but still that doesn’t make it any easier. I know I have been so fortunate to be able to spend three months with my little man and even though the first few weeks were tough (due to my own recovery not him) I still would do it all again in a heartbeat, and I would give anything to stay home. Again, don’t get me wrong, I do love my job and work with great people which makes it a little easier. But even knowing and remindng myself of that I am still sad about it. I know it’s for the best, this way with two incomes we can afford to go on vacations, to buy a house, lots of other fun things and even pay for his college some day.

So for the time being I’m loving on Gray and trying to remind myself why I am going back to work. It will be good for him to go to daycare and make friends, and it will benefit him in the long run (right?). I am helping provide for my family by going back to work….but it’s still tough. He grows and changes every day, I won’t be able to hear his little grunts when he eats, or see him anytime I want, or hold him and rock him or dance with him during the day anymore. Everyone says its harder on the parents than the baby, and that he will adjust. Please tell me thats true, because I’m having a hard time believing they will be able to hold him when he needs it and to dance around because he loves it so, and to know just the right things to get him to sleep….but I need to have faith that it will be ok and he will be just fine.

Any advice from working mommas out there would be much appreciated!

And you can bet I will be decorating my office in tons of picture of him I mean take a look, see why it will be so hard to leave this little man! 😦
